Gwendolyn Blue
Background
- Biography
Gwendolyn Blue's current research explores the ways in which environmental and material transformations intersect with notions of citizenship. Water provides a theoretically rich avenue for rethinking anthropocentric conceptions of citizenship. Her chapter takes up one of the most polluting developments in Canada: the Alberta Oil Sands. This case study will bring an important sense of contemporary urgency to workshop discussions. Even though she is at an early stage in her academic career, Blue offers a very strong background in communications and cultural studies as a former Associate Editor of the esteemed journal Cultural Studies with Lawrence Grossberg. She has made valuable contributions to the emerging field of ecocultural studies through her recent publications on politics and food. As these publications attest, Blue is particularly concerned about the connections between specific locals and their emergent politics - a key site of inquiry for our workshop. Blue's contribution will be particularly resonant with other presentations on citizenship in relation to water, thus strongly serving the 'cross-referencing' dynamics of the workshop.
