Background

Biography

Professor, Social Anthropology, University of Auckland / Professeure, Anthropologie sociale, University of Auckland

Veronica Strang is a leading international thinker in cultural anthropological perspectives on water, as most clearly evidenced in her large body of published work on water and culture, and her highly influential ethnography on privatization and the meanings of water (2004). Her scholarly accomplishments are complemented by her role as advisor to UNESCO's Programme on Water and Cultural Diversity. Additionally, Australia and New Zealand are the sites of some of the most innovative and interdisciplinary water scholarship to emerge in recent years, and Strang will be able to represesnt these compelling developments in a cross-cultural exchange with the mostly Canadian workshop participant body. Strang recently completed an ethnographic research project entitled Under Water, which examined the social and cultural factors involved in interactions with water resources in two major catchments in Australia.
